Jing graphic

I did a simple image that you could use to teach someone how to change their backdrop on their computer.  Jing would be an excellent tool for teachers as they prepare presentations to their students.  Using Jing would fall undre ISTE standard 3.  The teacher would be exhibiting their knowledge in the use of technology by using Jing in the classroom.

Diigo

Diana Dunn's Diigo Library

1.      Tag & List.  You can highlight and annotate pages on the web and you can highlight content, add comments and then bookmark for ease of use later.

2.      Connect and Engage. I can follow not only my bookmarks but also those of others. I can join other groups and collaborate with them on their bookmarks or share my bookmarks with others.

3.      Get Personalized Content Recommendations.  I can see bookmarks that others have recommended.

Web 2.0 is the second generation of the web.  Its focus is to enable people to be able to share information and to collaborate online.  It is based on servicing web applications. Users can interact or collaborate virtually.
Social bookmarking allows us to tag a website for later use. You are actually saving it to the web and not to your web browsers.  It is a tool that allows us to store and search for bookmarks online. One of the main advantages over traditional bookmarking is that you can share them with other people and see what other people think are interesting.  Social bookmarking is able to rank the resource depending on how often it is used.

I created an accout with Diigo (link is at the top of this post) and installed Diigolett.   I think this lesson would meet ISTE Nets T Standard 5 - Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership.  Diigo would encourage professional growth by encouraging students to follow other bookmarks and to determine what's important to them by building their own library.

I joined a group on Diigo called Education Research because I am also in a class that focuses on educational research and there looked like there could be some good information there.  I also made a few little changes in my profile just to mess around with Diigo.  I bookmarked several articles about 21st Century Learning and ISTE standards.  I am having some problems with making things look nice but I'll get it figured out.

I use Internet Explorer and Google Chrome as my browsers. Brower add ons can be very useful depending on what you are doing.   They enhance the browser proram you use.  I added espell on to my browser and so far I really like it.  I can type a word in and it automatically gives me the definition.  I don't add much to my computer because I'm always afraid of downloading something I don't really want though I might try Ad Block Plus.

Resume update

https://docs.google.com/document/d/13A8BeNhBRLXZdAMJXFNaQpf3junAwrq8cCn44FVB1tY/edit

My resume received a score of C+ from Rezscore which didn't really surprise me.  It's been a long time since I put a resume together.  My concern with Rezscore was that they said my resume was too long, they wanted me to add a professional statement at the top and that I did not mention references.  My resume was only one page, I did add the statement to the top and I did mention references.  I was not at all impressed with Rezscore.  I made the statement change but I can't shorten the resume any further and I don't think it's really appropriate to list references on the resume.  They rescored my resume and I received a grade of C+ again.  They gave me a 47 for Bevity, an 87 for impact and a 99 for depth.

When I went back to change my resume I was less impressed with Google Docs.  It's hard to make changes, and save a copy.  I kept getting an error message from Google saying that they were reporting the problem to Google.

Piccaso was a lot of fun and I didn't really have any problems using it.  I can see how a teacher would have lots of fun with their students using this.  They can be creative and silly and I would think children would like messing with Piccaso.  I think this lesson would meet ISTE standard 1.  It certainly  promotes creativity and inventiveness.  A teacher could use this lesson to promote self awareness but also as a way to see how students view themselves.

Snipping Tool

I loved the snipping tool.  I had no idea that it was even there.  The snip that I have posted is a screen that I use in my work everyday.  We run a system called Banner and I train other employees to use it at times.  This screen would be the basic access screen where I would start a training session.  With this tool I could capure all of the screens that I needed for training. The video showing how to use the tool was really good and made it very simple to use.  The only problem I had is my hand-eye coordination when I first tried to grab onto the area I wanted. I kept getting a little short of my target but I finally figured it out.  I'm having some trouble with the ISTE T standards and relating them to the assignments.  I think this assignment would relate to 2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments.  Students would be incorporating digital tools, such as the snipping tool, and the assignment would promote creativity.  In this lesson we were able to customize the assignment and that is another part of #2.

Google Docs

https://docs.google.com/document/d/13A8BeNhBRLXZdAMJXFNaQpf3junAwrq8cCn44FVB1tY/edit

I was pretty impressed with the Google Docs Resume Builder.  I had never used Google Docs to create a form.  It was simple and easy to use.  I haven't used Google Docs a lot but I like that you can do just about everything in it.  The form for the resume seemed complete and looked like most resumes I had used in the past. Google Docs definitely has an advantage over desktop computing because you can access it from anywhere and if you choose, so can anyone else.  In another class I had we learned to use Google Docs while writing a group assignment paper but that was the extent of my work with it.

As for using the information from this lesson in a classroom, there are all kinds of forms in Google Docs and just like the resume builder, you could apply any of them to a lesson and have the students upload their assignment to the web.  As more and more companies use resources like Monster.com, I would think that this kind of tool would be exceptional in the professional world.

I think that this assignment would relate to ISTE Nets T standard 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning. Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society.  I think this lesson would apply to this standard because it is more of a professional lesson than a school lesson.  A professional person that know how to put their resume on the web and continually update it appears to be a global kind of person.  They are out there for the world to see and hopefully hire.

How Millennial Are You?

According to the Pew Research Center, I am a GenXer.  That wasn’t quite as bad as I thought because age wise I’m really a baby boomer.  I don’t really think that I’m a savvy entrepreneurial loner either though.  The qualities of the Gen Xer include work ethic, traditional and respectful users.  I can say that I don’t sleep with my cell phone beside my bed.  When you get to be my age, sleep is so rare that no cell phone call is important enough to ruin it.  If I were a teacher I would be concerned about the quality of my students learning when it comes to technology.  As I look through the activity sheet for this class there are many assignments that I don’t have a clue as to where to even begin. Technology students would be so far ahead of me that I would be doing them a disservice to try and teach them.

In the Frand’s 10 characteristics of the information-age mind set, I think I would be included in the Multitasking Way of Life.  Although the author indicates that this category is made up of many young people, I really think that it includes most people anymore.  For me it is nothing to answer the phone, answer texts, fix dinner, hold a conversation with my husband, watch the news, pet the dog, load the dishwasher and do homework all at the same time. The 10 characteristics are as follows:

1.      Computers aren’t technology – computers are definitely technology for me. I still haven’t learned how to use the DVD player (which I understand is about obsolete).

2.      Internet better than TV – still love my television set. I never watch programming on the internet. I don’t really know why not but it’s just not as convenient for me.

3.      Reality no longer real – I’m of the mindset that it’s never real until you can authenticate it. I have had my Gmail account hacked more than once so now I don’t trust anything I get through the internet.

4.      Doing rather than knowing- I know that doing is important and if you can’t do “something” that’s not good but being in higher education, I think knowing is very important.  It may not matter if you have a degree or where it came from but I still think that’s a big deal.

5.      Nintendo over logic – I have never played Nintendo.  I’m not sure what that says about me.  I am not a trial and error kind of person.  Give me the directions, let me read them and I’ll go at it.

6.      Multitasking way of life – I’m definitely a multi-tasker (see above).

7.      Typing rather than handwriting – I would much rather handwrite something than type it.  I don’t know if it’s because I spend all day typing but I like to write.

8.      Staying connected – I do stay connected.  I have a cell phone, I have a Facebook account, I check my emails constantly so I guess I’m in on this one.

9.      Zero tolerance for delays – I think this really I a young person thing.  Sometimes I like to sit in traffic for a little while on the way home.  It gives me time to think and unwind.  I don’t always need instant gratification.

10.   Consumer/creator blurring – I don’t want to have to debug anything.  When I buy it, I want it to work perfectly.  I am definitely not a creator.

I don’t know if it’s all that important to be in.  I seem to manage just find and I think I’m probably out more than in.  For a young person that has their whole career ahead of them, they probably really need to be in. The lack of an information mind set could be doom for us as a country.  Because the whole world is so advanced we as a country must be too.  (Don’t know Carrie Bradshaw’s take on all this).

I had my daughter take the millennial profile test and her score was 96, mine was 33.  There is apparently a huge difference in our beliefs and the way we live.
